Four Myths about Dental Implants – Debunked!

Losing a permanent tooth can affect your confidence. It may cause you to hesitate when you smile and talk, while feeling conscious of people noticing the gap between your teeth. For anyone feeling this way, dental implants are the perfect replacement.

Unfortunately, dental implants are often misunderstood. Indeed, there are a number of myths about dental implants that need to be debunked. Say no more! Here are some common myths we’re all too happy to debunk.

1. They Are Only For Old People

The most common myth you may have heard is that dental implants are suited only for the older generation. Fact is: your age does not matter, and you can replace a lost tooth with an implant at almost any age. You develop a fully mature jaw around the age of 20. After that, getting an implant will not have any negative effects on your gums or jaw bone - provided you have maintained decent oral hygiene. Plus, you think only older folks lose teeth? DEBUNKED.

2. Implants Look Fake

While this may have been the case in the very beginning, advances in dentistry mean that you will now find it nearly impossible to tell a dental implant apart from a natural tooth. Unless you point it out to people, nobody else will be able to tell the difference either. From a cosmetic angle, implants look as good as teeth.

3. The Procedure Is Painful

This is another dangerous myth that has scared people away from getting implants. Having an implant installed is actually a fairly minor procedure: Your jaws will be numbed from the anesthesia as the periodontist sets about their task. The only thing you may feel is the slight pressure of the implant being inserted into the gum. Once the procedure has been completed, you will be advised on how to manage any leftover pain by your dentist. A dose of painkillers and ice should take care of that. Easy, peasy.

4. They Are Expensive

This belief often causes people to choose bridges instead of implants. For many people, however, implants may make more financial sense. Since they tend to last 10 to 15 years longer than a bridge, the extra cost is often worth it.
